Surgical Nail Removal for Fungal Nail Infections

Surgical nail removal can be done for severe or returning fungal nail infections. The entire nail (avulsion) or only part of the nail (debridement) can be removed. Surgical nail removal can be done in a clinic or your doctor's office. Your doctor will give you an injection in the finger or toe to prevent pain. He or she will then loosen the skin around the nail (nail folds) from the nail and separate the nail from the skin by using a tool under the nail. If only part of the nail is diseased, only the diseased part is removed. If you want to avoid future infection by preventing the nail from growing back, your doctor can destroy the nail matrix. This is accomplished by applying a chemical to the cuticle area after the nail plate is removed. An antibiotic ointment is applied to the wound, which is then covered with gauze and tape. What To Expect After Surgery For the first few weeks after surgery, clean and dry the wound. Then apply a layer of antibiotic ointment. The wound should heal within a few weeks. Fingernails may take 6 months to grow back, and toenails may take 12 to 18 months to grow back. Why It Is Done Surgical nail removal is usually performed only when a large portion of the nail is diseased and damaged or if your nails are very painful. In some cases, only the diseased portion is removed, not the entire nail. This procedure is rarely needed. How Well It Works After the diseased nail has been removed, the infection can be further treated by applying an antifungal cream to the remaining infected area or by taking oral antifungal medicine. Risks Risks of this procedure include: • Pain. • Infection. You can reduce the risk of infection by keeping the area clean and dry and regularly applying antibiotic ointment. • Abnormal nail growth. When the nail grows back, it may be odd in shape and appearance. What To Think About Nail removal makes it possible to apply an antifungal cream directly to the infected area, increasing the likelihood that the infection can be cured. For a chronic severe fungal nail infection, you can choose to have the nail matrix destroyed during the removal procedure. This treatment prevents a diseased or disfigured nail from growing back.

Dermaroller Treatment

What is a Dermaroller? Dermaroller (or skin roller) has the features of a precision engineered medical instrument, with the ease of use necessary to use it in the comfort and privacy of your own home. It is based upon a simple hand held roller which has surgical steel micro-needles which are able to part the pores of the top layer of the skin without damaging it. The pores close again around an hour later, but during that time, your skin is significantly better able to absorb and benefit from skin creams and lotions. Micro-needling of the skin is an increasingly common cosmetic procedure, but the Dermaroller is a medical device which is simple enough that you can perform it yourself at home. In fact, it has similar results to Laser Treatment, Chemical Peels and Dermabrasion, but it is considerably less invasive and carries only a fraction of the cost. How does the Derma Roller Work? As you roll the skin roller over your skin, it creates pin point punctures into the dermis – the majority of which are simply pushing your pores open temporarily. This is perceived by the body as damage, which stimulates the release of growth factors that trigger the production of collagen and elastin. The human body reacts to any injury by initiating the healing process, but usually it will only heal as far as it must to keep you healthy – which is different to healing to a cosmetic level. By persistently triggering the healing process, you encourage your body to continue healing until the job is finished. Your body normally assumes that scars, stretch marks and wrinkles are OK, but with the gentle daily reminder caused by the Derma Roller the body is tricked into continuing the healing process until the body has also healed itself on a cosmetic level. This process of skin remodelling can go on for months after each Derma Roller treatment, but noticeable results can be seen within a week! Your skin naturally renews itself every 40 days, so with a little stimulation changes can be dramatic and fast. Skin micro-needling with the Derma Roller may be carried out safely on all types of skin and all skin colours. Other treatments often have to avoid Sensitive areas – such as around the eyes, the neck and the backs of the hands, but the Derma Roller can be used on all of these areas. The epidermis and melanocytes in the basal area are not damaged, so there’s no possibility of post inflammatory hyper pigmentation.
